Many customers are wondering about the security of voice biometric identity verification in comparison to other biometric solutions such as fingerprint scanners and facial recognition software. Are voiceprints the most secure solution for protecting mobile devices?
The truth is that not all forms of biometric identity verification technologies are capable of providing the same level of protection against cybercriminals. On the other hand, voice biometrics does, in fact, provide greater security than other solutions since it relies on more than just the physical characteristics of a unique voiceprint when authenticating end users. A voice biometrics engine also takes into account how a user speaks, and what is said.
For example, a voice biometrics engine can register variations in the pitch and tone of a customer’s voice, and it can process secret combinations like personal identification numbers and advanced security questions.
These additional security elements make voice biometrics much more difficult to reverse engineer. Even if a criminal was to figure out how to accurately match an end user’s exact voiceprint, which would be very difficult, he or she would have an even harder time matching the exact speaking style of that person.
By comparison, Apple’s supposedly secure Touch ID sensor was proven to be vulnerable to hacking through the use of fake fingerprints. Even though the technology is now in its second generation on iPhone 6, little has been done to make it more secure. Touch ID proves that it is not possible to protect a mobile device with fingerprints alone. But used in conjunction with a voice biometrics solution, it could prove to be secure.
